The two Aequale for three trombones could be described as a youthful Bruckner: the only 22 -year-old composed in January 1847 while serving as a school mate in the monastery of St. Florian near Linz for the funeral of his great aunt. Regardless of the early genesis, the two short aequals, with their romantic-expressive harmony, are already "real" Bruckner and point to the chorale-like trombone movements in his later symphonies. Together with Beethoven's three equal parts for four trombones WoO 30 (HN 1151) they belong to the classics of trombone literature. The Henle Urtext edition is based on the autograph sources that are kept in the abbey libraries of St. Florian and Seitenstetten. For the lost bass trombone part of the second Aequale she provides a reconstruction proposal for the performance practice.
