Grenadilla vs. Cocobolo Wood
Backun offers a range of clarinet barrels in both classic grenadilla and exotic cocobolo woods. Each type of wood has unique characteristics that affect your clarinet’s sound differently. Grenadilla is the same type of wood used to make most clarinets today. It offers a deep, punchy sound with more volume and projection. Then there’s cocobolo wood, which is identified by its brighter red coloration. Cocobolo tends to give your clarinet a warm, dark tone and a lighter feel that’s ideal for solo and chamber music. Founder Morrie Backun started with a small woodwind repair shop outside of Vancouver, Canada. At one point, he was asked to overhaul a clarinet with a missing barrel. So he set out to make a brand-new one using exotic cocobolo wood, thus creating the very first Backun clarinet barrel. After that point, Backun gained international recognition for designing and creating a unique line of barrels, bells, and clarinets.
