The Fatboy is at home in the world's most prestigious concert halls, famous jazz clubs, and everything in between. It's our best-selling barrel, and for good reason. Artists who are called upon to interpret a wide variety of music appreciate the Fatboy Barrel’s unique flexibility and versatility. Note: In Japan, this model is known as the Backun Barrel.

Grenadilla vs. cocobolo wood

Backun offers a range of clarinet barrels in both classic grenadilla and exotic cocobolo woods. Each type of wood has unique characteristics that affect your clarinet’s sound differently. Grenadilla is the same type of wood used to make most clarinets today. It offers a deep, punchy sound with more volume and projection. Then there’s cocobolo wood, which is identified by its brighter red coloration. Cocobolo tends to give your clarinet a warm, dark tone and a lighter feel that’s ideal for solo and chamber music. All the woods used for Backun products are naturally aged in their climate-controlled facility in Vancouver, Canada.
