The Tenor horn ‘standard’ or instrument of choice over the years has been the Besson Sovereign for many bands. This is primarily due to the lack of professional standard instruments from other manufacturers. Little has changed in the development of the horn design until recent years with the emergence of triggers by York and Besson.

A welcome new addition to the market is the Yamaha Neo tenor horn. As a result of a partnership with horn superstar Sheona White, Yamaha are reported to have a whole rethink of every aspect of the design of the horn.

The significant design changes include the Bell being 5mm larger for increased dynamic range. The slides (including the tuning slide) have been moved into a more compact design to improve tone and pitch. There is more room around the heavier valve casing, facilitating a more natural playing position. The new design to the lead-pipe is a big improvement, as the horn is responsive and sonorous over the full range of dynamics.

My first impressions are that the Neo appears lightweight in comparison to the Besson models. In addition to making the horn appear smaller, also makes it feel more balanced to hold. The instrument is more free-blowing, but still produces a warm sound and firm pitch. I was also surprised by how slick the valves were, and was expecting them to need some wearing-in. For looks and durability, the all important instrument build and silver plating finish is perfect.

For those who use their left hand to access the main water key, will find it difficult to access from the front. Not a major issue, just a little quirk due to the new tubing placement required using the right hand if in a hurry to release the water.
I also found the standard mouthpiece delivered with the horn to be too shallow in cup depth, and would suggest opting for the signature mouthpiece that is special order when purchasing the instrument. Although I didn’t get to try one (I used my Alliance 2 during my test drive) I am advised it’s well worth the extra dollars.

Overall the Neo is a serious contender for new ‘standard’ of tenor horn. I found it a dream to blow, and particularly enjoyed the darker sound and extra projection. I would definitely recommend a blow of the Neo when searching for a new horn to purchase.
